Maryland joins a growing number of states dropping insurance prelicensing requirement.

In the past seven years, nine states have eliminated the prelicensing education requirement, with more expected to follow.

Maryland

Maryland eliminated the prelicensing education requirement on 10/1/2024.

Alabama

Alabama no longer requires prelicensing education as of 1/1/2024. ExamFX adjusted the completion requirements for Life, Health and Life & Health. Property/Casualty and Personal Lines will come later.

Mississippi

Mississippi has eliminated the prelicensing requirement for LIFE only effective 7/1/2024. All other lines still require prelicensing education and a certificate of completion. The ExamFX Life course will soon reflect these changes.

For individuals hoping to become licensed in states that no longer require prelicensing education for certain lines of authority, licensure only requires candidates to:  

  1. Apply for the state license 
  2. Pass a background check/fingerprinting 
  3. Pass the state licensing exam

Rules vary greatly between states, and this regulation change is no exception. It is more important than ever to understand state-specific prelicensing requirements before starting the licensing process.  

This marks a significant change for the industry and impacts those interested in earning an insurance producer's license the most. In states that no longer require prelicensing education, it is now up to learners to take control of their own course preparation to ensure they’re set up for success.
