West Virginia Insurance Prelicensing Information
📅 Updated April 25, 2025🟠 ExamFX Provider #15352
Requirements Overview
West Virginia requires producer licensing candidates to take and complete a state-approved prelicensing course. You will also need to apply for your license with the state insurance department and register for the state licensing exam. Make sure to register for all 3 (prelicensing course, license application, state exam) using the personally identifiable information exactly as it appears on your government-issued ID. Discrepancies will delay the licensing process.

West Virginia requires 20 hours of prelicensing education for each line of authority; and 40 hours for dual line of authority.
To earn your certificate of completion:

- Spend at least 20 hours studying for each line of authority.
- Score 70% or better on a Practice Exam- recommended.
- Score 70% or better on the Certificate Exam and complete the end of exam attestation.
Your exam will be based on the West Virginia exam outline, which can be found in Pearson VUE's Candidate Handbook.
How do I get my license?
Step 1: Complete a prelicensing course that has been approved by the Department of Insurance. Once you have completed your course, ExamFX will issue a certificate of completion which you may download and print from your online ExamFX account. The certificate is valid for six (6) months.
Step 2: Schedule your exam with your state’s testing provider, Pearson VUE. The fastest way to schedule your exam is to do so online at www.pearsonvue.com or call (800) 274-2614. There will be a fee to take the examination.
To change or cancel your testing appointment, you must contact Pearson VUE at least 48 hours in advance or forfeit the examination fee.
Important: When you register for ExamFX prelicensing courses, schedule your license exam, and/or apply for your license it is important to use the same name that appears on the identification forms you plan to present at the time of your testing appointment.
Step 3: Take and pass your state licensing exam. On the day of your appointment, you must bring with you two valid forms of government-issued identification (driver’s license, passport, military I.D., etc.) one of which must contain a photograph and your certificate of completion. You will not be able to take your exam if these requirements are not met.
West Virginia requires fingerprinting with your insurance agent licensing application. Fingerprinting requirements should be met after the licensing exam is taken and passed as they are valid for only 30 days after the printing has taken place. Candidates must contact MorphoTrust to schedule their reservation at an IndentoGO center by calling (855) 766-7746 or at www.identogo.com. You must indicate that your fingerprints are to be sent to the West Virginia Insurance Commission. Obtain a receipt that contains the 12-digit TCN number that must be submitted along with your license application. There is a fee for fingerprinting.
Step 4: Apply for your license. West Virginia resident applicants must use the online application service at NIPR. Fax a copy of your fingerprint receipt from IdentoGo to the Agent Licensing Division at (304) 558-4966.
Step 5: Maintain your license by being aware of your continuing education requirements. Most insurance licenses must be maintained by completing a certain number of credit hours of continuing education each licensing period. ExamFX offers CE courses that will help you comply with your state’s requirements. Click here to view your state’s education rules and stay on top of your license.
