Oregon Insurance Prelicensing Information

📅 Updated April 25, 2025

🟠 ExamFX Provider #10014953

Requirements Overview

Oregon requires producer licensing candidates to take and complete a state-approved prelicensing course. You will also need to apply for your license with the state insurance department and register for the state licensing exam. Make sure to register for all 3 (prelicensing course, license application, state exam) using the personally identifiable information exactly as it appears on your government-issued ID. Discrepancies will delay the licensing process.

Required Study Hours

Line of Authority Required Hours
Life 20 hours
Health 20 hours
Life and Health 40 hours
Property and Casualty 40 hours
Personal Lines 20 hours

Oregon requires 20 hours of prelicensing education for each line of authority; and 40 hours for dual lines of authority.

To earn your certificate of completion:

  • Spend the total amount of the required hours in the course study materials. Time spent within the courses will be tracked.
  • Read every chapter and take the end-of-chapter quiz. Score 70% or better on each chapter quiz before progressing to the next chapter.
  • Complete and pass the Certificate Exam with a minimum score of 70%.

Your exam will be based on the Oregon exam outline, which can be found in PSI's Candidate Bulletin.

How do I get my license?

Step 1: Complete a prelicensing course that has been approved by the Department of Insurance. Once you have completed your course, ExamFX will issue a certificate of completion which you may download and print from your online ExamFX account. The certificate of completion is valid for one (1) year.

Step 2: Schedule your exam with your state’s testing provider, PSI Exams. The fastest way to schedule your exam is to do so online or call (855) 340-3901. Your exam may be taken at a physical PSI examination center or via a remote online proctored exam.

To change or cancel your testing appointment, you must contact PSI at least 48 hours in advance or forfeit the examination fee. Note: A voicemail message is not an acceptable form of cancellation. Please use the PSI Website or call PSI and speak directly to a Customer Service Representative.

The state of Oregon requires fingerprinting and background checks with your insurance agent licensing application. Upon passing the examination you must be electronically fingerprinted. Fingerprinting must take place on the same day that you pass your examination at the PSI testing center. You will pay the fingerprinting fee on the day of testing.

Oregon Producer Fingerprints can only be done at an Oregon PSI test site. Fingerprints done in the past or for an employer cannot be shared or used for an insurance license. If you have any questions about the fingerprinting process, please contact Producer Licensing at the Division of Financial Regulation, by phone at (503)-947-7981, or by email at web.insagent@oregon.gov.

Step 3: Take and pass your state licensing exam. On the day of your appointment, you must bring with you two valid forms of identification (driver’s license, passport, military I.D., etc.) one of which must be government-issued and must contain your name and photograph. You must also bring the Certificate of Completion earned by completing your ExamFX prelicensing course. If you cannot provide the required identification, call (855) 340-3901 at least 21 days before your scheduled appointment to arrange a way to meet this security requirement. You will not be able to take your exam if these requirements are not met.

Security measures are taken for all testing methods. Restrictions on what you may bring with you to the testing center, into the testing room, and what you may wear will be enforced. For more information about the security measures that will be taken during your testing appointment, please read and review the candidate bulletin listed earlier on this page.

Once you have passed your examination you will receive an official score report. If you fail your exam, you will receive a failing score report with a diagnostic report indicating your strengths and weaknesses by examination type.

Step 4: Apply for your license. Oregon resident applicants must use the online application service at NIPR. Additional licensing guidance can be found at the Oregon Division of Financial Regulation.

Step 5: Maintain your license by being aware of your continuing education requirements. Most insurance licenses must be maintained by completing a certain number of credit hours of continuing education each licensing period. ExamFX offers continuing education courses that will help you comply with your state’s requirements. Click here to view your state’s education rules and stay on top of your license.
