Massachusetts Insurance Prelicensing Information

📅 Updated April 25, 2025

Requirements Overview

Massachusetts does not require licensing candidates to complete prelicensing education; however, ExamFX highly recommends that you complete an educational course before attempting to take your state’s licensing exam.

How do I get my license?

Step 1 (optional): Complete an optional prelicensing course that helps prepare you to take and pass your licensing exam.

Step 2: Schedule your exam with your state’s testing provider, Prometric. The fastest way to schedule your exam is to do so online or call (800) 741-9380. There will be an examination fee.

To change of cancel your testing appointment, you must contact Prometric at least 24 hours in advance or forfeit the examination fee.

Step 3: Take and pass your state licensing exam. On the day of your appointment, you must bring with you a valid form of government issued identification (driver’s license, passport, military I.D., etc.) which must contain a photograph. You will not be able to take your exam if these requirements are not met.

At the end of the exam, the score will be shown on the screen, and you will receive a printed score report.

Step 4: Apply for your license via NIPR or send the license application form and other required materials to the Massachusetts Department of Insurance. You must wait 48-72 hours after passing the examination, before submitting the electronic application. Forms and more information can be found at the Department’s Licensing webpage.

Step 5: Maintain your license by being aware of your continuing education requirements. Most insurance licenses must be maintained by completing a certain number of credit hours of CE each licensing period. ExamFX offers continuing education courses that will help you comply with your state’s requirements. Click here to view your state’s education rules and stay on top of your license.
