Kansas Insurance Prelicensing Requirements

📅 Updated April 25, 2025

Requirements Overview

Kansas does not require licensing candidates to complete prelicensing education; however, ExamFX highly recommends that you complete an educational course before attempting to take your state’s licensing exam.

How do I get my license?

Step 1 (optional): Complete an optional prelicensing course that helps prepare you to take and pass your licensing exam.

Step 2: Apply for a Certificate of Tax Clearance with the Kansas Department of Revenue and attach the Certificate of Tax Clearance to the NIPR Attachment Warehouse. You MUST electronically upload the Certificate to the application by visiting the Attachment Warehouse/NIPR, selecting "ALD" Additional Licensing Documents. Your application will not be processed until the Certificate has been received by the Department.

Step 3: Be fingerprinted and submit to a criminal history background check.

Please review the licensing guidelines on the Department’s website. You have one year from the date of application to complete the licensing process.

Step 4: Submit the NAIC Uniform Application for Individual Insurance Producer License online via the National Insurance Producer Registry.

Step 5: Schedule your exam with your state’s testing provider, Pearson VUE. The fastest way to schedule your exam is to do so online at Pearson VUE or call (888) 204-6255. Your exam may be taken at a physical Pearson Vue examination center or via a remote online proctored exam. Exam fees must be paid at the time of reservation.

To cancel your testing appointment, you must contact Pearson VUE at least 48 hours in advance or forfeit the examination fee.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When you register for ExamFX prelicensing courses, schedule your license exam, and/or apply for your license, it is important to use the same name that appears on the identification forms you plan to present at the time of your testing appointment.

Step 6: Take and pass your state licensing exam. On the day of your appointment, you must bring with you two valid forms of government-issued identification (driver’s license, passport, military ID, etc.), one of which must contain a photograph. You will not be able to take your exam if these requirements are not met.

When you complete your exam, a score report will be provided marked “pass” or “fail.” If you pass, you will receive more information on how to apply for your license at that time.

Step 7: Maintain your license by being aware of your continuing education requirements. Most insurance licenses must be maintained by completing a certain number of credit hours of continuing education each licensing period. ExamFX offers CE courses that will help you comply with your state’s requirements. Click here to view your state’s education rules and stay on top of your license.
